Scholarships For The Overlooked Student

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. – When you hear the words "scholarship candidate," often what come to mind are perfect or near-perfect grades, top-tier scores on standardized tests, and an immaculate record of involvement. But there are plenty of scholarship opportunities for students with those flashy credentials.

Clifton Harcum wanted to offer something for students that do not. "I wanted to create a scholarship for the student that's normally overlooked when it comes to the scholarship process," says Harcum. "I'm actually issuing three scholarships a year, for incoming freshman males, who are attending the University of Maryland Eastern Shore."

Years ago, Harcum was that overlooked student. Now, he's an author, inspirational speaker, and co-founder of a non-profit, making scholarships possible for students who show signs of leadership and promise, just not strictly on paper.

"I believe, wholeheartedly, that SAT scores, and GPA's aren't any indication of someone's ability to succeed in life. I believe it's really based on their desire.," he adds.

However, for the Clifton Harvey Harcum Scholarship, there are still some on-paper requirements. Candidates need at least a 2.5 GPA, must complete at least 20 hours of community service, and also be involved in some kind of extracurricular activity. Within the application process, there is an essay required as well.

Harcum believes that the key to success is educating, challenging, and empowering ourselves. Speaking from his own experiences in life, he says "personal development transforms individuals to become better human beings…once you set goals, you have an idea and an appreciation of who you are…you're able to do a lot more with your life."

The deadline for UMES-bound students is April 29th.
