Students Pitch Waiting Room Revamp For Atlantic General

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md. - The waiting room at Atlantic General Hospital apparently needs a bit of an upgrade, and its relying on the hands of high school seniors.  For the past semester, students from Worcester Tech created a whole new layout for the hospital's waiting room.  Plans Atlantic General is seriously taking into consideration.

Atlantic General's president, Michael Franklin, says, "there are things that we will look at almost immediately and look at how will we fit that into our budget".  Some of those things include building separate waiting areas for sick and injured people and opening up the area to allow easier access for wheelchairs and stretchers.  For cost and energy efficiency purposes, they would like to add a skylight to bring in more natural lighting, and create a green roof to save cooling costs and mitigate air pollution levels.

The project brought the minds of bio-med and engineering students together, who normally do not interact with one another.  Teachers say, they were glad to see how well the two programs worked together.  This project also helps to give students the hands-on experience they need to survive in the real world.

The students have won $20,000 for their idea from the Samsung, Solve for Tomorrow project.  They beat out over 2,500 middle and high schools in Maryland to grab that grand prize.  Next, the students hope to win on the national level, which will award them $140,000.  The money is given to the schools for IT technology, from Samsung and Adobe.
