Plastic Surgery App For Kids Sparks Social Media Firestorm

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 News - Cosmetic surgery for children? Virtually, a reality --a liposuction app for kids has sparked outrage on Twitter.

It's called Plastic Surgery for Barbie. The free game, marketed towards kids, involves making incisions with a scalpel and performing liposuction.

Following a social media firestorm, Apple removed the app from its store, and Google Play has taken down its version, but a game called Plastic Surgery for Barbara, geared toward adults, is still available on the App Store.

"That's crazy. Makes no sense. That's really crazy.  Why would you want to put a kid in that place? That's what grownups do. It's shocking," Barbara McElroy of Salisbury, Md. said.

"A lot of kids think about plastic surgery because of some of the movie stars and stuff, and some of the parents encourage that, but I don't. I don't think it should be," Sally Garrison of Salisbury, Md. said.

Mattel, the maker of Barbie, has said the app has nothing to do with the company or the Barbie brand, and it's looking into the use of the Barbie name.
