Delaware National Guard Braces For Future Budget Cuts

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - The Delaware National Guard says they are expecting some major budget cuts over the next decade.

Major General Frank Vavala with the Delaware National Guard says they do not have a set number yet, but because they derive their money from both the Army and Air Force, it is up to both groups to decide the reductions.

Major General Vavala says the government reducing expenditures by more than $500 billion will create a noticeable impact.

"As a component of the military we will definitely see a reduction in our budget as well," says Major General Vavala. "The realization is it's going to hurt and it's going to hurt us tremendously."

Major General Vavala says one option to offset the cuts may be to increase the side of the guard and reserve because they cost less than full time troops. In the meantime, the guardsmen have reportedly been told to stay focused on readiness, not budget debates.
