UPDATE: One Injured During Salisbury House Fire

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - A Monday afternoon apartment fire in Salisbury has been ruled accidental.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office says the blaze started just before noon at the Wicomico Housing Authority Complex, and raged through one unit. The flames spread to a second, and caused severe smoke in a third.

"I was laying there, watching TV," said William Morris Jr., whose apartment was next to the fire.

"I smelled smoke and I know I wasn't cooking anything, and so I ran outside and saw this tower of smoke."

The two alarm blaze took more than 20 firefighters a half hour to control, while residents like Morris, watched crews work quickly to prevent further damage.

"It was a good response from the fire department, they made good time getting here," Morris said.

When they arrived, Salisbury Fire Chief Rick Hoppes says they initially thought they were responding with a trapped tenant, but they found the resident laying in the front yard with burns.

"Our ems units assessed him and treated him for what ever his injuries were," Hoppes said. "He had burns from trying to extinguish the flames."

Donald Jones was taken to PRMC for treatment. A firefighter was also injured, but was treated on scene.

An investigation showed the cause as "careless discard of smoking materials," and has been ruled as accidental. Occupants of at least two units have been displaced.

"My apartment is full of smoke, but I think it will be alright for me to live in in a couple days," said Morris.

"I'm just blessed that we're all here today."

Damages are estimated at $55,000.
