Second Graders *Bridge The Gap* In Learning

Posted: Updated:

Felton, Del. -Students at Lake Forest Elementary School in Felton, De have spent the past five weeks learning about bridges.  Students tested their knowledge by building bridges strong enough for a toy car to ride up and over it, and hold the weight of multiple bolts. Friday, they got a special visit from engineers at DelDot.

Project Manager, Craig Stevens, of DelDot explains,"We're preparing them to go to college or become a professional. It exposes them to a job or something they can apply their learning too, instead of just learning that material."

The goal of the visit is to bridge the gap, between traditional book learning, and connecting student with real world experiences.

Second grade teacher Cindy Christianson believes its easier for students to learn when they can touch and feel what they are learning, in addition to book learning.  And she thinks it will push them into extending their education in the future.  "It's something that, it's maybe going to trigger their minds, maybe something they want to do later on.   They don't have to build bridges, but ... maybe they'll build a skyscraper!" she says.

Every student was excited and eager to answer questions.  When we asked second grader Giovonni Martino if he wants to build bridges when he grows up, he eagerly replied, "I do! I do, because I like being in the big trees, and high."

This is the second year that the school has taught bridges to their second graders.
