The Eunice Q. Sorin Scholarship

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Eunice Q. Sorin was a larger-than-life personality, a motel owner, and most of all, someone deeply committed to community involvement. To honor her, the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce started dedicating yearly scholarships in her name. "She was definitely young at heart, and was looking to the future of Ocean City, the youth of Ocean City, and our future leaders," says Melanie Pursel, of the Chamber of Commerce.

Over the past three years, they have awarded nine scholarships, totaling $15,000. This year, they will award three more. Pursel says that while typical markers of scholarly success such as grades and achievement are important, community involvement is crucial, adding "As we all know, to be a good leader in our community, and a good business person, having community involvement, being well rounded…that's very important."

The Eunice Q. Sorin Scholarship is available not only to graduating seniors, but also to people who are already members of the workforce, and looking to go back to school to further their education. Pursel says applicants must also be "affiliated in some way with a Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce Member…that can be anybody from a staff-person, an owner, child, grandchild, father, son, anybody."

This year's deadline is quickly approaching on January 17th. More information can be found at the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce website . Applicants can also call the Chamber directly at 410-213-0552.
