DE Panel Still Looking At Family Court Access

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Members of a Delaware task force studying the feasibility of opening Family Court civil proceedings to the public say they need more time to complete their work.

Panel members voted Tuesday to seek an extension of a Feb. 15 deadline for submitting a report to state lawmakers.

The task force has been reviewing several issues surrounding public access to proceedings including divorce, alimony, property division and child custody hearings.

Members voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend that child custody and visitation hearings be presumed open, while allowing judges the discretion to decide whether minor children should be present in the courtroom during those proceedings.

Delaware's constitution says all courts shall be open, but many Family Court proceedings are nevertheless closed to the public because of laws passed by the General Assembly.
