Why You Should Turn Down The Heat In Frigid Temperatures

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 NEWS - Local power companies are asking that you turn down the heat a few notches and avoid using appliances like the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.

It not only conserves energy, it helps to ensure that there's an adequate electric supply -- if there's too much stress on the system, it can cause a lot of problems,  like fuses melting because of overexertion.

"A lot of things can just lock up because of the extremely cold weather. The high winds that we have coupled with this can create problems with downed wires and things of that nature. Anytime that there's extreme demand on the system it can just put extra stress on the parts of the infrastructure that provides you with the electricity," Delmarva Power Spokesperson Matt Likovich said.

Power companies ask that you avoid using too much energy especially during those peak hours which run until about 7 p.m.
