DelDot Prepares Roads For Icy Conditions Across The State

DELAWARE - Delaware Department of Transportation officials are warning about black ice through tomorrow morning.

Jim Westhoff, DelDOT community relations officer, says crews spent the afternoon applying salt to Delaware roads. This reportedly includes primary and secondary roads in Kent and Sussex Counties, as well as local roads, including intersections and known trouble spots.

Westhoff urged drivers to get off the road by 6:00 PM Monday night, and for those who do have to drive, to be aware that black ice looks just like water at night.

"Drivers need to be aware of that and slow down, drive very cautiously, and give themselves a lot of room to stop and turn," says Westhoff.

Crews will reportedly be inspecting and treating roads into the early morning hours as well.

"Tuesday morning drivers should be aware there might be some slick spots," says Westhoff. "They should give themselves some extra time to get to work."

Officials are also asking motorists that encounter DelDOT trucks applying salt, to stay at least 150 feet away from the back of the truck.  Following too closely reportedly limits the distribution of salt on roads.
