MD's O'Malley Urges Vigilance During Cold Snap

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley is urging residents to take care and cover up to avoid harm from the cold snap.

O'Malley said in a statement Monday that the freezing temperatures and subzero wind chills expected overnight and Tuesday can cause frostbite and hypothermia after just a few minutes of skin exposure.

The Maryland Emergency Management Agency says it's monitoring conditions in case there's a need for more cold-weather and heating shelters around the state.

MEMA Executive Director Ken Mallette reminds residents to check on any friends and relatives who many not have enough heat.

State officials say travelers should carry extra blankets and snacks, and keep their cellphones fully charged.
