TALBOT CO., Md. - Saturday morning, highways and some side streets were clear of snow and ice, but if travel onto back roads in places like Talbot county it can be a completely different story.
WMDT met up with Shane Dickenson, a driving instructor with Shane's Driving School in Easton, to get tips on how to safely navigate on slippery roads.
Before you really get going on the roadways, he suggests testing how your car will react to ice or snow on the roads. "I run about maybe five miles an hour, hit the breaks, and that kind of gives me a gauge of what the roads are like and if they're safe," says Dickenson.
The key to staying under control, is of course to slow down, but sometimes, the elements get the best of you.
If it happens, and you find yourself losing control, Shane says to gently press on the brakes and focus on where you want to go, saying "if your car starts to slide, and if my eyes are going this way [points off the road], I put my eyes to go back on the road. Your body automatically...your hands come back and do what it needs to do."
As the weather warms up from Friday's frigid lows, Shane says motorists should still be on the lookout for treacherous conditions.
"Especially when it starts to melt and the water sits on top of the ice...it becomes really really slick and very dangerous," he says.
The biggest pieces of advice from Shane Dickenson: pay attention and don't panic.
