Delaware Officials Adopt Coyote Hunting Rules

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware environmental officials are adopting new rules for the hunting of coyotes and other nonnative animals.

New regulations established by the Division of Wildlife allow for coyote hunting from Sept. 1 through the end of February. Officials initially proposed a Nov. 1 starting date but agreed to a longer season in response to public comment.

The coyote trapping season will run from Dec. 1 through March 10.

Officials also are establishing rules for trapping and killing nutria, with the trapping season being the same as for muskrats.

Finally, officials say it will be illegal to recreationally hunt wild pigs in Delaware.

The regulations, which take effect next week, come after lawmakers passed a bill in 2012 authorizing environmental officials to manage nonnative species like coyotes, which some consider a nuisance.
