Line Forms As Driver's License Law For MD Illegal Immigrants Begins

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Immigrants living in the U.S. illegally now can get Maryland driver's license or ID card starting Thursday morning.

The new law includes a two-tiered license, so people without a Social Security number or lawful status before a 2009 deadline could still get a license to drive. WMDT caught up with one local and his translator on Wednesday after he received a license.

When asked how he would use his new license, the Maryland man, who would not provide his name, said "para trabajar" or "for work."

"[Our clients will] use the license to bring money to their house, to put food on the table and they are very happy," said Sylvia Watson, a translator at Dale Watson Law Firm.

To apply, drivers will need to show some form of ID, pass a written and road test and show provide two years of state income tax filings.
