Posted: Updated:

MILLSBORO, Del. - Delaware State Police say they are currently investigating a serious crash involving a bicyclist that occurred east of Long Neck.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 1:23 PM this afternoon as Paula Wilson was operating a 2008 Kia Sedona westbound on John J. Williams Highway (SR24).  Police say Richard Heinlein was riding a bicycle westbound on SR24 when he was struck from behind, ejecting him from the bike and onto the roadway.

Reports say Richard Heinlein, who was not wearing a helmet, was initially transported to Beebe Medical Center before being airlifted to Christiana Medical Center where he is currently admitted in critical condition.

Police say Paula Wilson was reportedly properly restrained, and was not injured in the collision.

Troopers say they are continuing their investigation into this incident and no charges have been filed at this time.  SR24 was allegedly closed between Banks Road and Long Neck Road for approximately two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
