WORCESTER CO., Md. - Worcester County residents will have the opportunity to learn about their flood risk in the new year.
The Worcester County Development Review and Permitting (DRP) will host a public Coastal Flood Risk Open House on January 16th at Stephen Decataur Middle School.
The event, which begins at 6:00 PM, will explain updates to the coastal flood maps made by FEMA. The maps indicate flood-prone areas and insurance companies use them to determine insurance rates.
As a result of these map updates, some buildings in Worcester County may reportedly be included in a high-risk flood zone for the first time, known as the Special Flood Hazard Area, which may result in the mandatory purchase of flood insurance. On the other hand, other properties may be removed from a flood zone entirely.
