Tips To Stick To Your New Years Resolution

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md - With the new year less than a week away, many people will be filling up gyms all across the country as part of their new years resolution.

But not everyone who does this resolution stays with it.

"On average, about 35-50% of members that join any gym in America for New Years resolution purposes tend to drop out within the first 6 months," says Amy Sorg, wellness coordinator at the Henson YMCA.

Some of the tips Sorg mentions include lowing one's expectations for the time being, and having fun.

"What you need to do is find something fun for you. Think about what you used to do as a child. Did you enjoy swimming? Did you take dance classes? You have to be willing to look outside of the box."

One of the biggest reasons why people tend to drop out from the gym is because they believe they can gain instant results, which is not the case.

"If you just stick to it and have your mind set to it then it shouldn't be a problem. For anybody," says Chimere Latricie Finney, personal trainer at Planet Fitness in Salisbury.

Another important thing to remember is to include weight lifting along with cardio.

"Weightlifting is very important. It's what gives us the foundation for us to keep the fat off that we've done from performing the cardio. Cardio is very important as well. Those two have to work together in order for us to stay in shape," says Finney.

If the gym scene is boring, both Finney and Sorg recommend going with company.

"Just keep it fun. Bring in a partner, bring a friend that they know that's going to motivate and push them. Also at the same time, not allow them to take away from the workout program as well," says Finney.
