Fourth Annual Governor's Challenge Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md - The 4th annual Governor's Challenge kicked off today.

"This is a nice shot in the arm over Christmas break," says Butch Walker, coach of Wicomico High School.

The challenge: Which state has the better basketball team between Delaware and Maryland. The winning state's governor would receive not only a trophy, but the losing state's desert.

Which means over the past three years, the State of Delaware was able to hoist the trophy and Governor Jack Markell enjoyed a Smith Island Cake for three consecutive years. If Maryland wins this year, then Governor Martin O' Malley would get to have a Delaware Peach Pie.

"It's tough but I love it because a lot of fans come out and watch us play," says Rashaan Handy, a senior point guard for Wicomico High School.

"I think the Delaware guys get up for this, not that the Maryland kids don't but it's a great experience for both states over the holidays. I know Delaware guys usually get excited and hype to come in Maryland," says Tim Velasco, coach of Delmar High.
