Family Holds 10th Christmas Breakfast For Cambridge Residents

Posted: Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The holidays can be a hard time for people who are unable to spend it with loved ones, but one family in Cambridge is making sure some residents do not spend this Christmas alone.

"It's just a wonderful, wonderful thing that the Smith family puts on," says Eric Young, a resident of Bradford House Apartments in Cambridge.

For the past decade, every Christmas morning has been the same for the ten siblings of the Smith family.

"It's just a joy because we know where we're going to be at, we know what we're going to be doing," says Elaine Smith Cephas.

The Smith's cook a delicious breakfast, including sausage, eggs, bacon, potatoes, ham, juice, and coffee, and hand out a variety of gifts to residents of the Bradford House apartment complex in Cambridge. Many of the attendees may have otherwise spent the morning alone.

"We provide everything, food, gifts, entertainment," says Carvel Smith. "We couldn't have them come to our home so we brought Christmas breakfast to them."

"A lot of times I try to give them stuff like toilet paper, paper towels, underarm deodorant, soap," says Lorraine Thompson. "Items that the food stamps can't buy."

The family has titled the annual event "Margaret Smith Family and Friends Christmas Breakfast," in honor of their mother. The morning is supported by a few donations, but mostly their own funds.

"It was my mother's dream to help other people and it was my sister's vision that helped get this started," says Carvel.

"We used to have Christmas at one another's house and the thought came to me that this wasn't what Christmas was all about," says Maime Loretta Smith. "It came to my mind to help someone else, give back to someone."

The event has turned into a major family affair. There are more than sixty nieces and nephews in the family, and many of them help serve the food, and provide entertainment for the guests.

"For years and years and years we plan to do this," says Ellene Smith. "We're training our children to do this, our vision is to expand it, make it even larger. We're just blessed."
