Woman Arrested For Stealing Money From Tip Jar

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - A woman was arrested for stealing money from a tip jar at a Rehoboth Beach restaurant after she filled out a job application.

Surveillance video caught Melissa Brittingham, 44, reaching into two separate tip jars at Five Guys in Rehoboth Beach taking tips.

"It's just so hard to believe that these times bring people to take from other people," said Pat Carroll-Grant of Rehoboth Beach.

Det. William Sullivan of Rehoboth Beach Police tells WMDT that he has never seen "that type of scenario happen".

Sullivan says the Rehoboth Beach woman wasn't hard to find. Police say Brittingham originally went inside the national hamburger chain looking for a job and filled out an application before heading out with fifteen dollars.

On that job application? Her real name and real address.

"[Officers] got the suspect's information from the application and went to her house and picked her up," said Sullivan.

David Moor of Lewes says he couldn't believe someone could take from a tip jar, especially so close to the holidays.

"People have families to buy presents for and thinking of their loved ones at this time of the year," said Moor.

"People are trying to make their living and someone's trying to come in and steal it all," said Lou Octavio of Wilmington.

Derick Towson says if he was put in a similar situation, he would "probably call the person out."

"[I'd] let everyone know and I'd probably block the door and take action," said Towson.

"You would hope that if you were around when something like that would happen you'd be able to step in and kind of help those guys," said Moor. "Maybe throw an extra couple bucks in the tip jar."

Brittingham was charged with theft under $1,500 to which she later pleaded guilty. She was placed on probation for one year and ordered to pay a $500 fine plus court fees.
