Minimum Wage Among Plans For MD 2014 General Assembly

Posted: Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - In less than a month, the Maryland General Assembly reconvenes and lawmakers are already discussing upcoming plans.

At this year's MACo conference in Cambridge, legislators said they are looking for ways to balance the budget and protect the environment. Raising the minimum wage may be a contested argument again this year as Governor Martin O'Malley pushes for a two dollar increase from the current minimum wage, $7.25.

"I don't think it's going to be that difficult," said Senate president Mike Miller (D-Dist. 27). "I think we'll have a floor for everybody that's going to raise the current wage from $7.25 to another wage and if you're a charter county you can go above it."

Last year' session saw the passing of a number controversial bills, including a gun control measure, a repeal of the death penalty and a bill to help develop offshore wind energy.
