Delaware Schools May Get Better Locks

DELAWARE, US - A school safety bill proposed by a Democratic lawmaker may give parents a peace of mind.

In advance of the January start of the legislative session, representative Earl Jacques Jr. has pre-filed legislation requiring that every door into a classroom in every public school must be lockable from both inside and outside the classroom.

"I think probably for most parents it's going to be an added layer of comfort level. To know there's that one extra barrier it'll be more comforting than paranoia. today's kids know what's going on in different schools and do practice drills. People watch the news and they see what's happening and I think it will give them an extra layer of comfort that theirs that barrier between their kids and somebody doing something that can hurt them," says Stephanie Smith, Director of Public Information for Seaford School District.

No word yet on how much it would cost to retrofit the classroom doors.
