Laurel Intermediate School Launches ERIP

Posted: Updated:

LAUREL, Del. - Laurel Intermediate School in Delaware announced today the launch of a new web-based portal that helps better connect law enforcement with schools in case of emergencies.  The guest list included first responders, Safety and Homeland Security Secretary Lewis D. Schriliro, Governor Jack Markell, and many more.  The crowd gathered today in the school's library to learn all about the new system.

It's called the Emergency Response Information Portal or ERIP for short. It is a central repository that contains helpful tools such as emergency action plans, photos of the school's interior and exterior, and even aerial photos of the building with grid markings to help guide emergency response teams to exact locations should a problem arise.

The program also has an app for Ipads and Iphones, making communication between the school and emergency personnel easier should a disaster strike. EIRP provides training programs for staff and teachers for multiple disaster situations- including floods, fires, and shootings.

"As important as our police and first responders are, the most important people are the folks already within the school and this will give them so much information about how to keep kids safe," says Governor Jack Markell.

Principle Susan Whaley explained to WMDT that the addition of this portal has made them aware of possible situations they hadn't thought of before.  "could be a train accident or some kind of spill or other emergency. You just think in the four walls of the school but it made us reach out to the community and made us think of things like that as well," she explains.

So far, six schools are tuned into the app in Delaware. The governor hopes more schools in the state will opt in to the program as part of the  Delaware Comprehensive School Safety planning initiative.
