BERLIN, Md. - A routine traffic stop becomes a cigarette smuggling bust in Berlin.
A police officer pulled over 30-year-old Nasser
Othman of Clifton, NJ while traveling on US 113 and
Burley Street on December 9th. Othman, who was reportedly driving a rental vehicle without authorization, gave conflicting stories of his
departure and destination to the officer.
The officer allegedly saw four cases of cigarettes on the rear seat plain view and conducted a search of the vehicle. An investigation revealed that Othman was transporting 502 cases, or 5,020 packs, of various brand cigarettes. The retail value of the cigarettes is estimated at $32,279.00 and a Maryland tax loss of $1,040.00.
Othman was arrested and released on his own recognizance.
