The Song Goes On In Georgetown

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. - The rain didn't dampen the holiday spirit in Georgetown.

"Obviously, we'd want to be on the circle," said Chip Guy, Communications Director
for Sussex County Government.

The 30th Annual "Caroling on the Circle" was moved inside Monday, where the spirits - and the crowd - were nice and warm.

"People still want to come out, they want to get into the holiday spirit, and they want to do their part to help the less fortunate here in the county," Guy said.

For the last three decades, the community huddled together to sing Christmas favorites - and in recent years - collect canned foods for local pantries and food banks.

"I know there are a number of organizations that look forward to it each year, this is a surge for them," Guy said.

In 2011, the town collected 24,000 thousand food items, and last year they beat that by collecting 33,000. So this year they want to do even better, and they're on the way. Carolers brought 20,000 cans to fill a 14-foot storage pod on the Circle.

"It's a great thing helping people during the holiday," said Haley Betteman, a student at Mariner Middle School.

"We just got together and raised as much as we could," said Abby Lopez. "I think we got 550."

They did it in just a week, and the County isn't done yet. They're accepting donations at the Administrative Offices in the Circle until December 31.

Several people we spoke to said their favorite part of the holidays were spending time with family, and thanks to this town's effort, more families will be able to do it, over full meals and full bellies.
