House Fires Displace Two Salisbury Families

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Just over two weeks before Christmas, a chimney fire puts a Salisbury family of eleven out of their home.

From the outside, you can't see the damage to this house on Dundee Drive, but the Hilton family invited WMDT inside their home without cameras, for insurance reasons.  Inside, our news crew observed a large, charred hole in the living room floor.

According to the Hilton family, they lit a fire in the fireplace Saturday night, and put it out before going to bed.  But it apparently smoldered through the night, reportedly spreading, and causing smoke to fill the home.

While many of their possessions were ruined, the Hiltons say they're optimistic.

"I'm grateful that we're all alive because I can't replace my children, but it's overwhelming.  I've cried a few times, says Valerie Hilton, "it's hard, but it could be so much worse.  There are so many people who are so much worse off right now."

The family says they will be looking into the cause of this chimney fire.  We're told it may be at least two months before this family of eleven can return to their home.  If you were wondering, besides Mom and Dad, that's nine kids, including two sets of twins.

Another house fire yesterday left another family displaced in Salisbury.  This one on Louise Drive, with charred furniture scattered across the yard.  No word on the cause of this fire.

The Red Cross is helping both families well with groceries and a safe place to stay.

The Red Cross doesn't accept donations for individual families, but if you would like to donate to the local Red Cross Chapter, visit The Red Cross Delmarva Region online.
