Winter Weather Hits Delmarva

Posted: Updated:

DELMARVA - Freezing rain, snow, and sleet fell across the peninsula, as Delmarva got its first taste of wintry weather Sunday, covering parts of the area in snow and ice.

While the weather might've been a bit all over the place, one thing is certain: it can be dangerous.

Unfortunately, it was common sight on the roadways.  WMDT came across a fender bender near Rehoboth, where the driver apparently struck a utility pole after losing control, making a right hand turn down an icy roadway.  Luckily, she was ok.

Despite inclement conditions, WMDT found a number of people out today.

"I know it's starting to get a little slick out though, so I'm sure people are...are being more careful," says Heather Giovannitti.  She was shopping with her children at Loews.

Winter seemed to sneak up on Delmarva...with snow and sleet falling across the region.

Bob Ruskowski and his wife, both from Pennsylvania, were staying at their home in Rehoboth Beach.  He says "I was kind of surprised 32:00>

The weather comes just days after temperatures soared into the mid 60s.

"You know I was driving down the road and it went down like 20 degrees while I was, you know driving," says Ruskowski.

The weather was a nice surprise for people like Heather Giovannitti.  She and her family recently moved to Delaware from Oregon, saying "the first snow since we moved here 37:44 the kids are pretty happy out there making a snowman this morning."

But not everyone greeted Old Man Winter with open arms.

Not officially winter yet, one woman we spoke to said "I'm ready for summer."

While not much fell in our area, folks hit home improvement stores to stock up on shovels and salt, and workers treated sidewalks coated with a thin, but slippery layer of ice

Because of the weather and slick conditions, as a precaution, the Christmas Parade in Salisbury, which was scheduled for Sunday afternoon was been rescheduled for Sunday December 15at 2PM.
