Maryland Man Critically Injured After Crash In Townsend

Posted: Updated:

TOWNSEND, Del. - Delaware State Police say a Warwick, Maryland man was critically injured in a crash yesterday evening.

According to reports, the crash happened at 11:54 PM as Jesus Velazquez, 43, drove a 2007 Ford F150 eastward on Blackbird Forrest Road. The vehicle reportedly failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection with Dupont Highway and entered the intersection. The driver's side of the Ford was allegedly struck by a 1997 Lexus 300 that was traveling south in the left lane  of southbound Dupont Highway.

Police say Velazquez, who was not properly restrained, was ejected from the vehicle, and was transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital and admitted in critical condition. Police say alcohol consumption by Velasquez is considered to be a factor in this crash. A passenger in his vehicle reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision.

Police say the driver of the Lexus, Antoinette Haysel, 65, of Rehoboth Beach, was properly restrained at the time of the crash and received only minor injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is reportedly continuing its investigation into this crash, and no charges have been filed.
