MD, DE Coaches Announce Governor's Challenge Schedule

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - It's almost that time for Maryland's Smith Island Cake versus Delaware's Peach Pie.

In three weeks, both will be on the line again during the annual Governor's Challenge basketball tournament.

Coaches and officials announced details for event this year with teams from Delaware and Maryland vying for bragging rights. In the first three years, Delaware has won the trophy meaning Maryland took home the first state's pie.

"It's been [in Delaware] for three years, I think it's time for a change," tournament director James Simmons said. "It's hard enough to beat a state three times in a row, but four times, I don't see how it can happen. I think Maryland is going to pull it out."

Game on.

In 2010, Gov. Martin O'Malley first issued the challenge to Delaware's governor Jack Markell and then, Maryland lost three years in a row.

This annual tournament consists of 35 teams, going head-to-head in the holiday classic. The fun starts Thursday, December 26th at the Civic Center.
