UPDATE: DSU Lifts Marching Band Suspension

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. - A local University has lifted the suspension on their band, after suspicion of hazing in the organization.

Delaware State University says their investigation into the DSU Approaching Storm Marching Band found some minor instances of hazing activities, but that those activities did not result in any injury to any members of the band.

Officials say that any type of hazing by a DSU-sanctioned student organization is prohibited by the University, and is a violation of the DSU Code of Conduct. 16 students, of the 150 members of the band groups, were reportedly found to have engaged in minor hazing activities. The University says these students will face DSU Judicial Affairs hearings and that could lead to dismissal from the band, if they are found guilty of the Code of Conduct violations.

The suspension on all band performance activities has been lifted, after it was imposed on November 16th.

Dr. Alton Thompson, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, said "This is a teachable moment and we will continue to underscore to our students that their behavior reflects not only on the University, but also on their very character. We strongly believe that as a result of this investigation, our band will emerge stronger and will continue to be great ambassadors for the University."
