Package Delivery: Amazon Tests Drones For Express Service

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 NEWS - Imagine ordering something online and then in a matter of minutes, the package arrives right at your door delivered by a drone.

Amazon.com hopes to have unmanned delivery drones ready in the next four or five years. The drones would only be able to carry packages which weigh up to five pounds, but Amazon says 90 percent of their orders weigh less that.

WMDT spoke to residents on Monday about the possible technology.

"I think it would be a lot more convenient," said Katie Hughes. "You wouldn't have to wait around. If you order something or you forgot a Christmas present or a birthday present you would get it that day instead of waiting."

"Technology is just a cool," said Caitlin Minton. "It would be awesome and convenient and you'd get it like that. We're in and ten second technology age right now."

FAA rule changes could make the flights legal as soon as 2015.  The octocopters Amazon would use are currently in testing.
