Judge Recuses Self In Tight Race For AG In VA

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Richmond Circuit Court judge who was expected to preside over the recount in the race for attorney general has recused himself.

The court's chief deputy clerk, Ed Jewett, said Monday that Judge Bradley B. Cavedo recused himself last week. He did not state a reason, which Jewett said is not unusual.

Instead, Judge Beverly W. Snukals will preside over the recount.

The recount court will also include two judges selected by the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. They will settle any disputed ballots in the nearly knotted race between Democrat Mark Herring and Republican Mark Obenshain.

The State Board of Elections has certified Herring's 165-vote edge over Obenshain on Nov. 25. Obenshain has petitioned for a recount.

A preliminary hearing is expected this week.
