DE After-School Programs Slated For Funding

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Twelve Delaware schools and community organizations have been chosen to receive funding for after-school programs aimed at preventing youth violence and suicide.

The funding is part of $2.2 million approved by lawmakers for the Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families this year.

Thirteen other schools and organizations submitted successful applications for similar after-school programs in an initial round of funding in September.

Gov. Jack Markell and other officials planned to announce the second round of funding on Monday. It's an outgrowth of a Centers for Disease Control report recommending additional after-school programming for Kent and Sussex counties as a suicide prevention measure.

Officials contacted the CDC last year following the suicides of several young people, including three who attended the same high school.
