SU Rugby Sets Out To Defend National Title

Posted: Updated:

FRUITLAND, Md - Crouch, touch, set. Those are the commands used throughout rugby games, but Salisbury University's team added "win" Saturday.

The team hosted USA Rugby's Collegiate Sweet Sixteen, making a run to defend their 2012 national championship title.

"All the work that you put in all season, it all culminates into this," said team captain Nick Khul. "It's nationals, it's game time."

They took on Bryant University in the first round, and it was a tale of two halves.

"We didn't run enough the first half," said coach Bob Davis. "We train with a lot of running .. and we just we just didn't do that early enough."

The team was still able to put up 12 points in the first half, but regrouped during half time.

"It was really a wake up call at half time, and the guys responded," said Khul.

They came out with a fierce determination. The offense found a spark and key tackles fell in synch.

"Defense wins games and once we started making our tackles, and they couldn't get much on us, we knew we were good," Khul said.

Adding a few more scores to the board, Salisbury walked away with a win, and advances to the Elite Eight Sunday. Khul said their plan is simple.

"Putting together a perfect game, or as close to  that as possible. It's win or go home."
