Federalsburg Woman Honored For Rising $120K For M.S.

FEDERALSBURG, Md. - Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating illness that affects more than two million people world wide, but a local woman - who at 88 years-old - hasn't let it stop her.

"I'm not ready to be slowed down," Bea O'Toole said. "You do all the things that you can and that's it."

"All those things" is an incredibly long list, but right at the top sits becoming a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Hall of fame. She was honored last month for raising $120,000 over nearly 20 years of volunteering.

"I'm delighted," O'Toole said. "Every little bit you can find for research - because that's what most of that money is intended for - then you're that much closer to a cure."

She was diagnosed in 1983, and started volunteering ten years later at 68. She says she was inspired to dedicate her time because the society's programs encouraged her to live an active life.

"It's such a nice feeling to be around people with your same problem who can understand what you're talking about," O'Toole said.

She's made a lot of friends over the years through MS support groups and volunteer efforts, and keeps up with them through lunches, book clubs and special outings. Now that She's retired from volunteering, she looks to spend more time with friends and family.

O'Toole says she's glad she chose to push on and not give in to the worry she had when she was first diagnosed three decades ago.

"I learned to accept things and not worry about things you can't change," O'Toole said. "I've achieved a lot in my life and I've done all the things I wanted to do."
