NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Delegate Lynwood Lewis has won the Democratic nomination to replace Ralph Northam in the Virginia Senate.
Media outlets report that the 51-year-old Eastern Shore Democrat won 55 percent of 4,879 votes cast Saturday in the 6th Senate District Democratic nominating caucus.
Lewis had won re-election to a sixth term in the House of Delegates on Nov. 5. Northam won the lieutenant governor's race.
Republicans will hold a party canvass Thursday to choose their nominee to fill the 6th Senate District seat.
Gov. Bob McDonnell will schedule a special election.
The 6th District includes Accomack County, Northampton County, Mathews County and parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
