Worcester County, Highest Rate Of Marijuana Arrests In MD

Posted: Updated:

WORCESTER CO., Md. - Worcester County has the highest rate of marijuana arrests in Maryland.

That's according to a report by the Maryland ACLU, which says the county has a rate of 21.32 arrests per every thousand people.  This, compared to the next highest - Baltimore - at 11.36, and neighboring Wicomico County at 5.24.

The study does acknowledge the extremely high arrest rate in Worcester County is likely due to the swell of tourists and temporary workers in Ocean City during the summer, a fact which locals don't find surprising.

"It doesn't really surprise me because usually, when people are on vacation, they usually like to have what they consider "fun," so for some people, smoking marijuana is fun," says one man from Worcester County.

That report uses official FBI and U.S. Census data, the ACLU has analyzed arrest rates and trends for marijuana possession by race for every county in Maryland between 2001 and 2010.
