UPDATE: Safe Haven Has Permanently Closed Its Doors

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. - A local animal rescue, that has been at the center of controversy for several months, has officially closed its doors.

A little more than a year after opening, signs were posted on the doors of Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary in Georgetown, Delaware saying the center is permanently closed.

Friday, WMDT went to the former no kill shelter, and were met with a locked front gate, and a seemingly abandoned Safe Haven.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page Thursday night, a page which has since been deleted, Safe Haven representatives said they were able to place the majority of the dogs with other shelters and families, but due to what they call severe behavior issues, some dogs were humanely euthanized.

There has been no official count released on just how many dogs were euthanized and exactly where the others were transported.

Members of the volunteer group Delaware No Kill Alliance were on the scene Thursday, when dogs were taken away by the ASPCA, and spoke with WMDT Friday about how they plan to move forward.

"We are working with the attorney general. We are also working on changing some of the laws and making them more enforceable", said Lisa St. Claire from Delaware No Kill Alliance told WMDT, "our goal is to model ourselves - Delaware - to become a no kill state."

WMDT has put in multiple calls to Safe Haven board members, but we have yet to hear a response.
