PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Soon nearly half of University of Maryland Eastern Shore graduate students will have a chance to live closer to campus.

The Department of Agriculture announced $12.7 millions in low-interest loans granted to the Maryland Hawk Corporation to fund the building called Hawk Plaza, which is a 144 bedroom room unit across from Washington High School.

According to their website, Maryland Hawk Corporation is a University-Affiliated Foundation 501 (c) (3) non profit organization focused on the commercialization and entrepreneurial development of intellectual property developed at UMES.

Right now, he campus has more than 600 graduate students commuting to school from all over the region.

"Housing is a significant decision. It's part of that decision of choice so this allows the university to be able to be more competitive in certain programs and allow more students to live right here, participate and be right here on campus," said Krysta Harden, deputy secretary for USDA.

Groundbreaking on the land is scheduled for next month. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by this July with 180 graduate students able to move in right away.

UMES officials tell WMDT that the Maryland Hawk Corporation will be obligated to repay the money.
