AELR Committee To Hold Hearing Over Phosphorus Management Tool

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - Farmers across Maryland will get another chance to voice their concerns about a proposed Phosphorus Management Tool.

The Administrative, Executive, and Legislative Review Committee will hold a hearing on November 20th at 2:00 PM in Legislative Services Building at 90 State Circle in Annapolis.

The Phosphorus Index currently helps farmers determine how much fertilizer they can apply to fields so excess phosphorus does not run into nearby waterways. However, farmers worry that the proposed changes could impact how farmers use chicken manure on farm fields, which tends to be high in phosphorus.

The AELR committee reportedly does not have the authority to prevent the tool from moving forward, but some local farmers tell WMDT, they hope the hearing will convince the committee to ask the Department of Agriculture to stop the legislation.
