Ms. Vanessa Goldey

Delmar Elementary

Delmar, Maryland

Nomination: How many first-year 2nd-grade teachers have a student whose father has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer? Yes, my son's teacher, Vanessa Goldey at Delmar Elementary was that teacher. My healthy US Marine Corps husband had headaches for two weeks; went to the doctor for what we thought were migraines; but instead was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given six to nine months to live. When the school year began, my son, Nathaniel, was hesitant about leaving his Daddy and disinterested in attending school. As my husband's progress worsened, we were worried Nathaniel would not be involved in his schoolwork. How does a teacher create a positive learning environment for that student? Vanessa Goldey did! Miss Goldey's lessons were exciting everyday with hands-on instruction and memorable lessons. For example, her unit on ants was so impacting that my son boasted to his older brothers how he was the "king of ant knowledge". As the school year progressed, my husband was visibly sick and his condition worsened. We had to have Coastal Hospice assist with his care at home. And, I worried that Nathaniel would lose interest in school. Yet, Miss Goldey continued to make magic happen within her classroom daily. Everyday when Nathaniel arrived home from school, he rushed in to let his Daddy know how exciting his day had been. This brought smiles to my husband's face. And, all was well with the world. (at least for that moment - and that's all that mattered) As time progressed with no income, finances became devastating to manage. Miss Goldey organized several schoolwide "casual days" where funds raised were given to us for our utility bills. She even made a special trip to personally bring Nathaniel's favorite dinner of Chinese food to our house. Then, on April 19th, my husband lost his battle with brain cancer. Vanessa Goldey naturally made a difference when it was absolutely needed. She kept Nathaniel's interest; thus, enabling him to finish the school year positively. In fact, Nathaniel's test scores were well above average which allowed him to be accepted into the county's gifted and talented Magnet Program for this school year! Vanessa Goldey deserves to win your Teachers Who Make A Difference award.
