S.U. Project Hosts Benefit For "Stop The Violence" Program

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - A class project turned into a community fund raiser Saturday, as teams of basketball players took to the courts for a cause in "Hoops for Thanks."

The community basketball tournament was the brainchild of Salisbury student Janelle Oni, and her marketing classmates. The assignment was to plan, promote and execute an event, and the group chose the "Stop the Violence" program in Salisbury.

The students worked on it for months, and say it actually became less like homework and more like a labor of love.

"I met with Nancy, and I loved the program," said Oni, referring to program president Nancy Rendine.

"I really hope the kids stop the violence and come here and do more productive things in the community because they're a bunch of great kids."

The non-profit program is volunteer-based, except for three employees.  It allows kids a place to play sports, use computers and stay off the streets.
