Safe Haven Animal Shelter Prepares To Close Its Doors

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. - In just under 30 days, the Safe Haven Animal Shelter will close its doors for good. But before they do, volunteers and staff are working tirelessly to make sure all of the current canine residents find a loving home.

And Saturday, it was Libra's turn to head out.

"As soon as he walked into the room, it was love at first sight," said Stephanie Brewer, Libra's adoptive pet parent.

He circled the lobby of Safe Haven, with his tail wagging and excitement in his eyes as he played with his new owners. One could say the excitement is long overdue: he's been a resident of Safe Haven for a year.

It's a no-kill shelter for dogs like Libra to wait as long as it takes for new owners to find them. But, time is running out. The shelter will shut down November 30.

"We plan to have those dogs out," said Beth West, acting president of Safe Haven. "That is our goal and that's what we're working towards."

According to West, Safe Haven lost much of its source of income in September when it was no longer allowed to handle dog control duties. Now, it's putting all the work into getting the dogs adopted as a first option.

The shelter had 140 animals five weeks ago, and now they have 77.

"There's plenty of people out there that should be coming to adopt these dogs, cause they're wonderful dogs," Brewer said.

The ASPCA is helping the shelter adopt the dogs out, with as many as five or six leaving each day. They're also helping Safe Haven locate shelters and animal groups up and down the east coast that have room -- and time -- for the animals to stay. Something Libra -- who's new name is Duke -- won't have to worry about.

"I feel great that he doesn't have to be in that small little room anymore," Brewer said. "He get's to come home and have fun and be a part of our family."

An addition that was free to the Brewers, and anyone else that would like to bring home a Safe Haven dog.  The adoption fees have been waived for now, and the pets are available every day until they close for good, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

And although the shelter is closing, they could still use supplies and financial support until the very last dog has a new home.
