Bracing For The Impact of Cuts To Food Stamps

Posted: Updated:

DELMARVA - With one in seven Americans currently using food stamps, news that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is losing $5 billion dollars in annual funding has hit some members of the community hard.

"You're already getting these blows and here come another one," says Bernice Edwards, Executive Director of the First State Community Action Agency in Delaware, which works with individuals and communities to overcome the challenges of unemployment, homelessness,
substandard living.

Just one day before $5 billion were siphoned from the nation's food assistance program, food banks across the Eastern Shore started to hear from residents who will be most impacted.

"We've already started to get plenty...many, many people calling and asking for food," says

The loss in funding is due to the expiration of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Families on food stamps are expected to lose about of $36 from an average $275 monthly benefit.

Food pantries across Delmarva have already been feeling the strains of a struggling economy, but with the expiration of stimulus dollars to the food stamps programs, more families will be in need, and shelves could become more bare.

Facing empty cupboards, food pantries are focusing on teaching clients how to make due with what they already have.  The Food Bank Of Delaware is releasing daily tips on Facebook to help families stretch their grocery budgets, and the First State Community Action Agency in Georgetown is teaching families cooking techniques to make the food they're given by the pantry, last just a little longer.

Bernice King says it all fits into the mission of the First State Community Action Agency, "our goal is to help people lift them out of poverty, and its getting more difficult every day, but it's nothing that's impossible."
