On The Lookout: Police To Business Owners "Check Books Often"

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO CO., Md. -Wicomico County sheriff's warn business owners of corporate theft less than a month after Ocean Pines bookkeeper Diane King was convicted of stealing money from her business.

According to Sgt. David Owens, the crime increased after the economy plummeted, but thieves like King would start stealing months, sometimes years before underneath the eyes of their employers.

Several cases reportedly came out to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars lost for business owners.

"They started to examine their books closer and they started to see where those monies were going out," said Owens. "Well, they hadn't started to go out during this depression, they had started to go out long before this depression came along.

"They were just prosperous all this time, so they didn't really pay attention to it and it was employees empowered with paying the bills with the books that were taking from the businesses."

Owens says business owners must continue to check their books so this type of crime doesn't happen to you.
