French Instructor Named DE Teacher Of The Year

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A French teacher at Appoquinimink High School has been named Delaware's Teacher of the Year.

Lea Wainwright, who has been teaching in public and private schools since 1993, said Tuesday night at the banquet in Dover that she wasn't expecting the honor. She was one of 19 instructors nominated by their school districts for the award.

Wainwright will receive $5,000 to be used in her class, along with a $3,000 personal grant. She will also compete for National Teacher of the Year. The other 18 school district candidates will each receive a personal grant of $2,000.

Wainwright says she tries to get her students to think big in the classroom and help them "be as bright and successful as they can be."
