After Sandy, Crisfield Resident Gets Glimpse Of New Home

Posted: Updated:

CRISFIELD, Md - Ruth Fountain is one of a number of Crisfield residents who lost their homes to Sandy, but there was much happier news on Monday.

Ruth was taken on a tour of her brand new home. Repairs on her original house weren't enough - so the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee and volunteers stepped in.

"Every time they come, they always have a good word for me," said Fountain. "I just love it, it makes me feel so good. I've never met such beautiful people."

Community volunteers spent countless hours rebuilding her home, using materials purchased through donations and grants. John Phoebus of the Recovery Committee says that made all the difference.

"We've received probably between two and three million dollars in grant funds," Phoebus said. "Three million dollars has let us help people probably to the tune of six million dollars because we're able to double the money through volunteer efforts.

Now one of those people, Ruth is just waiting until the home passes inspection before she can move in.

"If it wasn't for them, I'd have nothing."
