Crisfield Continues Recovery One Year After Sandy

Posted: Updated:

CRISFIELD, Md. - This week marks one year since Super Storm Sandy battered the East Coast and left one local town in devastation.

But, the residents of Crisfield came together Sunday, as they have so often in the past 12 months, to reflect on how far they've come.

"Some people say disasters bring out the worst in a community, in Somerset County and in Crisfield, I say disasters bring out the best in our community," said John Phoebus of the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee.

What's come from the destruction left after the storm is a neighbor-helping-neighbor effort to rebuild what Sandy washed away. Phoebus says they've helped two to three hundred families get help, like Charlie Adams, whose home was destroyed in the storm.

"My parents raised 15 children in that house," Adams said. "I'm thankful to everyone who's had a part in this."

Two homes were built for Crisfield residents with help from grants, volunteers and the Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee since the storm hit. And officials say more are planned.

"I see a town in recovery," said Crisfield Mayor Percy Purnell. "One year out from the storm and we're really starting to gain momentum."

And according to Phoebus, it's momentum they'll need. The committee continues to receive new cases every day, and estimates a full recovery for the city could take up to a year.

"We're proud of our accomplishments, but we're mindful that there are still people who need help recovering from the hurricane," Phoebus said. "We want to send the message that the Long Term Recovery Committee going to be there for them, and we're not going to rest until every person in Somerset County gets the help they need."
