Delaware Offers Free Online LGBTQ Anti-Bullying Training For Teachers

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - According to a 2009 GLSEN National Climate Survey, LGBTQ students are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide and seven times more likely to experience verbal and physical violence – which is why the state of Delaware is asking teachers to take a free, interactive online training program that provides techniques to address the issue.

It's called Kognito Step In, Speak Up Anti-bullying Training. The program first introduces you to three teenagers who help you understand the challenges that LGBTQ students face. It then walks you through a real-life bullying situation in a classroom setting and helps you practice intervening.

Then you'll have a one-on-one conversation with a student who's being picked on and you'll learn some support strategies. Intervention is key - research shows that when adults respond quickly and consistently, it can stop bullying over time and possibly safe a life.

Although this training program targets educators in Delaware, state officials say anyone who works with children in any capacity is more than welcome to participate.
