Local High School Honors Teacher For "A Crucial Catch" Game

SALISBURY, Md. - Students and staff at Wicomico High School came out in pink for A Crucial Catch game against Stephen Decatur High Thursday evening.

"A Crucial Catch is to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society and Women Supporting Women. It's in partnership with the NFL. It also encourages others who are battling cancer that other people are here fighting for you and standing with you," Student Government Advisor Dionna Sterling said.

Thursday's game honored a remarkable teacher at Wi-High - Melissa Schock who was given a devastating diagnosis almost two years ago.

"It was cervical cancer. It was a regular check up. We just caught the cancer pretty much at the early stages, which made the fighting easier," Schock said.

Despite a year and a half of chemo and radiation therapy, she came to work with a smile on her face.

"She was so dedicated. She wanted to be here all the time for the kids," Principal Don Brady said.

"She told our class last year and we all cried. She's always so uplifting. She does anything to help anyone. No matter what it is, she'll help you with personal problems or anything school related. She would come to work and do her job and just keep moving," student Keyshaun Hinmon said.

Now cancer free, Schock hopes awareness programs like A Crucial Catch will encourage people to go get a checkup.

"Just because you don't feel bad, just because you don't have any symptoms, doesn't mean that there's not something that you shouldn't get checked out," she said.

Next Friday, October 25, Parkside High will take on Wi-High in a "Play for Pink" football game which also raises money and awareness for breast cancer research. Proceeds from this event support Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at the Wicomico County Stadium.
